A Sense of Place: How to Create a Garden with Atmosphere (Conran Octopus Gardening)
About the Author Arne Maynard is a successful garden designer based in London. After studying architecture, he turned to garden design and now his commissions range from large-scale country gardens to small urban spaces.

His gardens have appeared in many publications, including Gardens Illustrated and The Sunday Telegraph, and together with Piet Oudolf, he won the prestigious Best Garden Award for his Gardens Illustrated 'Evolution' Garden at the 2000 Chelsea Flower Show.

Arne Maynard believes that achieving balance is the key to garden design and in A Sense of Place he shows you how to open your imagination and create a garden that will enrich your life and the place where you live.

Arne explains the backbone and the foundation blocks of design, how to find inspiration and how to improve upon what is already in place in your garden.

With a focus on plants which create different moods and atmospheres, all can be seen in the series of case studies which include The Wetlands Centre (the London site of the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust) and his own five acres in Lincolnshire.

Consumer review about A Sense of Place: How to Create a Garden with Atmosphere (Conran Octopus Gardening) :

If you are at all interested in how to remake the modern garden without throwing away all that's good about traditional garden spaces, this is for you. The pictures are completely inspiring. Arne Maynard is a sometime collaborator of Piet Oudolf and it's probably just because he tends to work for private clients that his work isn't better known and respected. He has a wonderful attitude towards nature, designing log piles which look simple and disorganised until you realise they are part of a larger Andy Goldsworthy-type scheme. And his prairie plantings with grasses are terrific. Treat yourself to this book, it's much better than a lot of the other stuff out there.(Read more)

Create simple solutions for growing organic gardens! The word "hack" has a multitude of meanings these days, but if you ask garden author Shawna Coronado what a hack is, she might just wave her hand toward her own back yard.

She could be pointing at the garden bench she created from leftover wood posts and a few cinder blocks, or the rows of wine bottles buried soldier-style along a winding pathway, or even the garden soil itself, which is blended by hand from an organic soil recipe she devised.

A hack is really just a great idea that's come to life. In 101 Organic Garden Hacks you'll find the top tips, tricks, and solutions Shawna has dreamed up in her career as one of America's most creative gardeners.

Some are practical timesavers; others offer clever ways to "upcycle" everyday items in your garden. One characteristic every hack shares is that they are completely organic and unfailingly environmentally friendly. Divided into a dozen different categories for easy reference, each hack is accompanied by a clear photo that shows you exactly how to complete it.

If you are looking for resourceful ways to improve your garden and promote green living values right at home, you'll love paging through this fascinating, eye-catching book.

Backyard Chickens Beyond the Basics: Lessons for Expanding Your Flock, Understanding Chicken Behavior, Keeping a Rooster, Adjusting for the Seasons, Staying Healthy, and More!
Review "...has info not always found in other chicken primers" (The Cleveland Plain Dealer 2017-05-14) About the Author Pam Freeman is the editor of Backyard Poultry magazine and Countryside magazine.

After she received four Silver Laced Wyandotte chicks from the Easter Bunny, her flock quickly grew and Pam launched pamsbackyardchickens.

com. In the years that followed, she hand-raised chicks, nursed chicks and chickens back to health, and experienced the entire lifecycle many times over.

During that time, Pam also joined the Countryside Network, where she is now an editor managing a roster of her fellow chickenkeeping writers.

Pam is a resident “Ask the Expert” columnist for Backyard Poultry magazine and continues to write regular posts about chicken keeping and homesteading for Backyard Poultry and other publications.

A must-have for every backyard chicken keeper, Backyard Chickens Beyond the Basics goes beyond introductory lessons and explores the realities of raising a flock for eggs -- and entertainment, of course! From odd eggs and molting to feeding and preparing for the seasons, this book covers the subjects beginner books don't adequately address and re-examines common knowledge that may not actually hold true.

It's a resource to turn to time and again for expert advice to make sure your birds are happy, healthy, and productive.Author Pam Freeman, an editor and "Ask the Expert" columnist at Backyard Poultry magazine, draws on her years of experience fielding reader questions to identify and clearly explain many common - and some not-so-common - issues in chicken keeping.

How do you add new chickens to your flock? What is the pecking order and how can you change or control it? Is it better to raise chicks by hand or with a broody hen? What do you do when you collect eggs and discover: lash eggs, calcium deposits, soft eggs, eggs within eggs, or wrinkled eggs? In Backyard Chickens Beyond the Basics, readers will find not just answers, but a book full of "coop truth" that helps them continue on their journey.

Because as every chicken owner knows: Chickens are individuals and real-life chicken keeping often takes you far from the beaten path.

Wild Orchids of the Algarve - How, When and Where to Find Them

Wild Orchids of the Algarve How When and Where to Find Them
Wild Orchids of the Algarve - How, When and Where to Find Them
The Algarve is home to more than 30 wild orchid species. For tourists and residents alike these are major attractions of the very varied Algarve countryside, but for newcomers in particular orchids can be hard to find and even harder to identify.

Wild Orchids of the Algarve solves these problems, providing easy-to-follow introductions to the biology and habitats of orchids, and explaining in non-scientific language why the Algarve is so special.

More than 200 full colour photographs of orchids - in their natural settings as well as stunning close-up pictures - ensure that readers will be able to identify the orchids they find in the Algarve.

This beautiful book is based on naturalist and bestselling author Sue Parker's 16 years research and photography of wild orchids in Portugal's Algarve region.

Clear, jargon-free text, superb photographs plus an illustrated Table of Contents and a pictorial Glossary of Botanical Terms make this a uniquely accessible guidebook.

Consumer review about Wild Orchids of the Algarve - How, When and Where to Find Them :

As a frequent visitor to the Algarve, I know just how wonderful the wildflowers of that part of Portugal are. Having seen quite a few orchids there in the past, I set myself a target of finding as many as possible - ideally all - of the Algarve's wild orchids. I feel much more confident of succeeding, having received as a Christmas present this lovely hardback book. Now I will know not only what species I am looking for but also where and when to expect to see each one. I particularly enjoyed the introduction to orchid biology, in the first section of the book, and I am looking forward to exploring as many of the recommended walks as I can fit in to my next Algarve holiday. The idea of including in the Contents List a thumbnail closeup flower picture for each orchid species is brilliant. Not only do you see at a glance the name of each orchid (the scientific name as well as the corresponding English and Portuguese names where they exist) but also what its flower form and colours are, without having to refer to an index at the back of the book and then thumb through pages to get to a particular species. I wish my other wildflower guides had this reader-friendly feature.Overall I cannot praise this book highly enough. The text is very readable, the pictures are superb, and the sturdy hardback make it very good value for money when compared with other region-specific guide books. Highly recommended.William Morris(Read more)

Understanding Roots: Discover How to Make Your Garden Flourish
Review -I realize now that I've been waiting my whole life to read this book. Robert Kourik makes a major contribution to the science of horticulture and to plant lovers everywhere with Understanding Roots. This book gives us an understanding of the whole plant, and that can only make us better gardeners.---Jeff Cox, former managing editor of Organic Gardening magazine and the author of twenty books on gardening, landscaping, food, and wine-Wow - what a MINDBLOWING book! I love what you have done and you have made me a better gardener! This is some seriously juicy stuff you have here! With Understanding Roots you have some seriously powerful information in your hands right now!---Ivette Soler, author of The Edible Front Yard, free-lance author and garden designer-Understanding Roots changed how I think about plants.

Much more is going on below ground than we ever imagined, as this book--and particularly its magnificent root diagrams--shows.

Robert Kourik brings us up to date with current research and shares his decades of experience in this fascinating journey into the dynamic world of the rhizosphere.

Gardeners, farmers, and researchers all will profit from this readable, detailed guide to how plants make their living in the soil.

---Toby Hemenway, author of Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture and The Permaculture City-As is typical of Robert Kourik's books, he distills complex research to give home gardeners both a great read and the knowledge needed to successfully pick out, plant and grow trees and shrubs in their gardens.

Kourik, using diagrams of the actual root systems, takes us on a fascinating underground tour. He explains how and why understanding root growth and soil type greatly influences where and how to apply, water, mulch and fertilizer.

---Sam Benowitz, Owner, Raintree Nursery-Roots are the controlling part of the plant, and we get the best results when we know more about them! Robert Kourik in Understanding Roots makes this possible--with almost double the information as in his previous book on roots.

It has been noted that when we improve root health a tiny amount--just two percent to four percent--it is possible to increase yields two hundred percent to four hundred percent.

Understanding Roots contains a wealth of information. It is a rare treasure!---John Jeavons, author and developer of Sustainable Biologically Intensive Food-Growing, Willits, CA-Fascinating, beautifully illustrated and fun to read!---Larry Korn, editor of Masanobu Fukuoka's The One-Straw Revolution and Sowing Seeds in the Desert-A must have book in your library! Robert has always been able to make scientific fact and jargon readable, if not entertaining.

Understanding Roots is no exception. Having found many rare drawings of excavated roots he presents many guidelines about how to place compost, mulch, fertilizer and water to make your garden thrive.

---Rosalind Creasy, author of Edible Landscaping and 17 other gardening and cooking books-Sometimes in gardening, it's what you don't see that counts.

So, unless you have x-ray vision, let the very knowledgeable Robert Kourik help you visualize--and improve--the root of the situation.

---Mike McGrath, host of Public Radio's You Bet Your Garden and garden editor for WTOP in Washington, DC-Over the decades, author/researcher/contradictarian Robert Kourik has turned gardeners and farmers inside out with his scientific yet easily accessible books, including Understanding Roots: Discover How to Make Your Garden Flourish.

You will have several 'Whoa, I didn't realize that!' moments. This is an important book that will change the way you look at your plants, your soil, your fertilizers, and, especially, your watering habits.

---Fred Hoffman, producer/host, Get Growing with Farmer Fred radio shows, Sacramento, CA-Kourik does it again as he shares his investigations into what makes plants tick (hint, it's subterranean).

---Ken Druse, radio host and author and photographer of twenty gardening booksMidwest Book Review- Synopsis: "Understanding Roots: Discover How to Make Your Garden Flourish" uncovers one of the greatest mysteries underground -- the secret lives and magical workings of the roots that move and grow invisibly beneath our feet.

Roots, it seems, do more than just keep a plant from falling over: they gather water and nutrients, exude wondrous elixirs to create good soil, make friends with microbes and fungi, communicate with other roots, and adapt themselves to all manner of soils, winds, and climates, nourishing and sustaining our gardens, lawns, and woodlands.

"Understanding Roots" contains over 115 enchanting and revealing root drawings that most people have never seen, from prairies, grasslands, and deserts, as well as drawings based on excavations of vegetable, fruit, nut, and ornamental tree roots.

Every root system presented in this book was drawn by people literally working in the trenches, sketching the roots where they grew.

The text provides a very detailed review of all aspects of transplanting; describes how roots work their magic to improve soil nutrients; investigates the hidden life of soil microbes and their mysterious relationship to roots; explores the question of whether deep roots really gather more unique nutrients than shallow roots; shares the latest research about the mysteries of mycorrhizal (good fungal) association; shows you exactly where to put your fertilizer, compost, water, and mulch to help plants flourish; tells you why gray water increases crop yields more than fresh water; and, most importantly, reveals the science behind all the above (with citations for each scientific paper).

Critique: Exceptionally well informed and informative, "Understanding Roots: Discover How to Make Your Garden Flourish" is a compendium of thoroughly accessible, nicely illustrated, practical and directly applicable information that will prove invaluable for amateur and professional gardeners alike, and should be a part of every community and academic library Gardening reference collections and supplemental studies reading lists.

Understanding Roots contains over 115 enchanting and revealing root drawings that most people have never seen, from prairies, grasslands, and deserts, as well as drawings based on excavations of vegetable, fruit, nut and ornamental tree roots.

Every root system presented in this book was drawn by people literally working in the trenches, sketching the roots where they grew.

The text provides a very detailed review of all aspects of transplanting; describes how roots work their magic to improve soil nutrients; investigates the hidden life of soil microbes and their mysterious relationship to roots; explores the question of whether deep roots really gather more unique nutrients than shallow roots; shares the latest research about the mysteries of mycorrhizal (good fungal) association; shows you exactly where to put your fertilizer, compost, water and mulch to help plants flourish; tells you why grey water increases crop yields more than fresh water; and, most importantly, reveals the science behind all the above (with citations for each scientific paper).

This book contains at least eighty percent more new information, more results of the latest in-depth and up-to-date explorations, and even more helpful guidelines on roots than the author s previous book (Roots Demystified: Change Your Garden Habits to Help Roots Thrive.

This is not a revised edition it s a whole new stand-alone book. "

She has written articles for a variety of magazines, including Flower & Garden, Woman's Day, and Fine Gardening. She writes extensively on organic gardening techniques and lives in Washington State.

Low maintenance and big harvests are just two of the benefits of using teepees, trellises, cages, hanging baskets, wall pockets, stacking pots, and multilevel raised beds to grow vegetables.

From beans on a tepee to tomatoes on a wire archway, melons on a slanted fence to cucumbers on a trellis, kiwis on a clothesline to strawberries in a pot, there are simple growing guidelines here to fit every gardener's favourite tastes and site.
